Central University of Tamil Nadu is one of the 8 central universities of the country founded by the Government of India, through an Act of Parliament in 2009. CUTN currently offers Integrated, Post-Graduate (PG) and Research programmes in multiple disciplines through Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET).

Students must fulfill the relevant eligibility criteria for admission to different programmes of the university. Candidates can register for the test through the online registration process available on the official CUCET website. Upon successful submission of applications, candidates must submit the processing fee through online/offline payment modes within the stipulated time. Check CUTN Admission 2019

Upon successful submission of applications and online payment of required fees, the students will receive a confirmation message instantly. If the fees payment is done through offline mode, candidate will get a message after reconciliation from the bank within 2-3 days of payment. Applications should be submitted online only. Eligible candidates will be shortlisted for admission to concerned programmes on the basis of their scores in the CUCET.

Eligibility Criteria

The following section contains detailed eligibility criteria for different programmes offered by CUTN.

MA

Master of Arts (M.A.)

M.A. English Studies – 20 seats

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should possess Bachelor’s degree with at least 55% marks with English as major or one of the major subjects. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 30 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned year of admission

Note: Candidates who qualify CUCET 2015 will be required to appear for an additional test which will be conducted by the Department of English Studies. The duration of the test will be 60 minutes and candidates will answer one out of 6 descriptive type questions

M.A. Hindi – 20 seats

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should possess Bachelor’s degree in Hindi with at least 55% marks (or) any Bachelor’s Degree with at least 55 % marks in Hindi as Optional/Elective/Compulsory Language. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 30 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned year of admission

Note: Candidate who has Bachelor degree but had not studied Hindi as any of the subjects (or) does not have minimum required aggregate marks in Hindi as a language, should have qualified Oriental title equivalent to B.A. in Hindi recognized by the Central or State Government with 50% of marks.

M.A. Tamil – 20 seats

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should possess Bachelor’s degree with at least 55% marks with Tamil as major or one of the major subjects. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 30 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned year of admission

Note: For CUCET passed candidates, an interview may be conducted by the Department in addition.

M.A. Media and Communication – 20 seats

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should possess Bachelor’s Degree with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade from a recognized University. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 30 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned year of admission

Master in Social Work – 20 seats

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should possess Bachelor’s Degree (studied in 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 system) in any discipline with at least 55% marks. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 30 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned year of admission

M.Sc

The university offers M.Sc in the following disciplines:

  1. M.Sc. General Economics – 50 seats
  2. M.Sc. Financial Economics – 50 seats
  3. M.Sc. Applied Quantitative Finance – 50 seats
  4. M.Sc. Environmental Economics – 30 seats
  5. M.Sc. Actuarial Economics – 30 seats
  6. M.Sc. Chemistry – 16 seats

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should possess Graduate Degree with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade from a recognized University and had studied Mathematics at plus two level. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 24 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned year of admission

Note: In case of M.Sc Chemistry, candidate should possess Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (Main) or with Chemistry as one of the major subjects with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 55% and 50% respectively.

M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

Ph.D. (English)

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should possess M.Sc. degree with 55% marks in the concerned or an allied subject, preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent Degree of three years duration from a recognized University/Institute. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • UGC-NET qualified Candidates are exempted from Entrance test. Interview/ written test may be conducted by the concerned department in addition to the above

Ph.D. (Physics)

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should possess M.Sc. degree with 55% marks in Physics or equivalent degree, preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent Degree of three years duration from a recognized University/Institute. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • UGC-CSIR NET/ GATE/ Equivalent national fellowship candidates are exempted from Entrance Test. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for Interview

Ph.D. (Chemistry)

Eligibility:

  • Candidates should possess Master’s Degree with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade in Chemistry/ Organic Chemistry/ Inorganic Chemistry/ Physical Chemistry or equivalent degree, preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent Degree of three years duration from a recognized University/Institute the subject. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • UGC-CSIR NET/ GATE/ SLET qualified candidates and DST-INSPIRE/RGNF/MANF fellowship holders are exempted from Entrance Test. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for Interview

Ph.D. (Tamil)

Eligibility:

  • Candidates should possess Master’s Degree with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade in Tamil / equivalent subject in Tamil, preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent Degree of three years duration from a recognized University. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • UGCNET qualified Candidates are exempted from Entrance test, for them a written test and interview may be conducted by the Department in addition. For CUCET passed candidates, an Interview may be conducted by the Department

Ph.D. (Life Sciences)

Eligibility:

  • Candidates should possess Master’s Degree with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade in Life Sciences/ Zoology/ Animal Sciences/ Biomedical Sciences/ Biological Sciences/ Biochemistry/ Biotechnology/ Genetics/ Botany/ Plant Sciences, preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent Degree of three years duration from a recognized University/Institute. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • UGC-CSIR NET/GATE qualified Candidates are exempted from Entrance Test

Ph.D. (Economics)

Eligibility:

  • Candidates should possess Master’s Degree in Economics with minimum 55% overall marks, preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent Degree of three years duration from a recognized University/Institute. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 50% and 45% respectively
  • Candidates with UGC-JRF are exempted from entrance test

Ph.D. (Mathematics)

Eligibility:

  • Candidates should possess Master’s Degree in Economics with minimum 55% in Mathematics, preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent Degree of three years duration from a recognized University/Institute.
  • Candidates with UGC-CSIR JRF, GATE, NBHM or qualified in any other National level Exams for admission into PhD programmes are exempted from entrance test. Candidates with UGC-JRF are exempted from entrance test. Selected candidates will be required to appear for an interview conducted by the Department.

Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] + Master of Science [M.Sc] (Mathematics) , Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] + Master of Science [M.Sc] (Physics) & Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] + Master of Science [M.Sc] (Chemistry)

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should have passed +2 examination or equivalent of any recognized board in India with 60% marks (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science/ Biology). For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 55% and 50% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 20 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned admission year

Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] + Master of Science [M.Sc] (Life Sciences)

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should have passed +2 examination or equivalent of any recognized board in India with 60% marks (Biology, Physics, Chemistry with or without Mathematics / Computer Science). For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 55% and 50% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 20 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned admission year

Bachelor of Arts [BA] + Master of Arts [MA] (Economics)

Eligibility:

  • Candidate should have passed +2 examination or equivalent of any recognized board in India with Mathematics or Economics with Business Mathematics at the Hr. Secondary level with 60% marks in aggregate. For OBC and SC/ST candidates, minimum required aggregate is 55% and 50% respectively
  • The candidates should not have completed 20 years of age as on 1st of July of the concerned admission year

How to Apply

M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts , MA & BA

Candidates are required to fill the online application form in order to appear for CUCET 2019. Candidate may fill the form partially and login again to complete it later.

Candidates will receive confirmation alerts at the time of registration and after completing payment through online modes. In case of offline payment through E-challan, the applicant will get a message after reconciliation from SBI.

Pre-requisites for applying to CUCET 2019:

  • Email id
  • Scanned photo
  • Scanned signature
  • Credit card, Net banking or ATM-cum-Debit card (for online Payment mode)
General Instructions for filling CUCET Applications

CUCET application process consists of the following steps:

Step 1: Candidate should login to official CUCET website and go to the “Apply” section.

Step 2: Click on the Registration link against the UG/PG Course which you want to apply for. After successful registration, candidate will receive a mail and message at the respective register email ID and mobile.

Step 3: After filling-in all the relevant details carefully, candidate should upload his/her scanned photo and signature.

Note: The photograph should have dimensions 200 x 230 pixels and the file size should be between 10kb to 100 kb. The signature image should have dimensions 140 x 60 pixels and the file size should be between 5kb to 20kb

Step 4: An this step, candidate can register for three courses in a particular selected program from Central University of Tamil Nadu

Step 5: In this step, candidates can edit their applications and proceed for payment of processing fee through any of the following modes:

Online mode of payment: Candidates can pay the required application fee through online payment modes such as Netbanking/ Creditcard/ Debitcard.

Offline mode of payment: Candidates can also pay the required fee offline through E-Challan at any SBI branch. If an applicant pays the examination fee through offline challan mode of SBI, the bank charges of INR 50 will be borne by the candidate.


Selection Process

M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts , MA & BA

Admission to all the above mentioned programmes of the Central University of Tamil Nadu is done on the basis of score obtained by the candidate in the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET).

Note: Candidates who have cleared National Level Examinations for admission to Ph.D. programmes i.e. UGC-CSIR JRF or equivalent will be exempted from CUCET Entrance Exam. However, such candidates will have to appear for interview. Some of the university departments may conduct written test at the time of interview, if required.


Reservation Criteria

In each department, 15%, 7.5% and 27% of seats are reserved for SC, ST and OBC candidates respectively. According to Govt. of India norms, 3% of the seats are reserved for differently abled persons
