The University of Calcutta (informally known as Calcutta University or CU) is a public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, established on 24 January 1857. It was the first institution in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and secular Western-style university. Within India it is recognized as a “Five-Star University” and a “Centre with Potential for Excellence” by the UGC and the NAAC.

There are seven Nobel laureates associated with this university including Ronald Ross, Rabindranath Tagore, C. V. Raman and Amartya Sen. It has the highest number of students who have cleared the doctoral entrance eligibility exam in Natural Science & Arts. The university is recognized as one of the most prestigious universities in the world. It was also ranked 2nd by the India Today Top India Universities of 2012, 2013 and 2014.

University of Calcutta invites Applications for admission to the Postgraduate Programmes for the academic year. The programmes offered are Master of Education (M.Ed.) Programme, Master of Arts Programme, Master of Commerce (M.Com.) Programme, Master of Science Programme in Agriculture, Sciences and Home Science. The application process for all the Programmes is to be completed online only on the University website. 60% of the seats will be reserved for students from Calcutta University only and the admission for the remaining 40% of seats will be through an Entrance test.

Eligibility

M.Ed

You should fulfil any of the following criteria:-

  • You should have passed the B.Ed. Degree of 1 or 2 year duration with minimum of 55% marks or B Grade in Grading System.
  • You should have passed the 4 year integrated teacher education degree programme (B.El.Ed/ B.Sc.Ed. / BA Ed.) with minimum of 55% marks or B Grade in Grading System Or D.El.Ed/ D.Ed with a bachelors Honour’s degree (BA/BSc/B.Com.) each with minimum 55% marks or B Grade in Grading System Or Special B.ed with minimum 55% marks or B Grade in Grading System.
  • You should have passed the Honours Degree at undergraduate level (excepting 4 year integrated teachers education programme) and M.A./M.Sc./M.Com Examination with minimum 55% marks in aggregate at Post Graduate level

Note: There will be a relaxation of 5% marks in case of SC/ST/PWD category.

Age: You must not be more than 45 years of age if you’re a fresher and 55 years of age if you are employed in Secondary/Higher Secondary Schools, Colleges, Government and Semi Government organizations, as on June 30th, 2019. There is a relaxation of age for maximum of 5 years for students belonging to Scheduled Caste, Schedule Tribe and Person with Disability categories.

Eligibility Criteria:

For all M.Sc. Programmes:

You should have a B.Sc. Hons. Degree (10+2+3) in the respective subject, from a recognised University.

You should also have secured a minimum of 55% marks in case of general category and 50% marks in case of SC/ST/PWD category in aggregate.

MA

You should fulfil any of the following criteria:-

  • You should have passed the three years Honours graduate Degree (10+2+3 System of the current and immediately previous year under Calcutta University) or from any recognised University of India. However, the eligibility of the Honours Graduates from Universities outside West Bengal will be subject to the decision of C.U Equivalence Department.
  • You should have passed Honours/Major Courses in Arts at Under Graduate Degree Level from Indira Gandhi National Open University/ Netaji Subhas Open University and the Distance Education Programmes of other Universities in West Bengal.
  • You should have qualified Pre-M.A. Examination of Calcutta University in the current year.

M.Com

You should fulfil any of the following criteria:-

  • You should have passed the three years B.Com. Honours graduate degree of the current year or immediately previous year under Calcutta University or any other recognized Universities.
  • You should have passed Honours/Major Courses in Commerce from Indira Gandhi National Open University, Netaji Subash Open University and the Distance Education Programmes of other Universities of West Bengal.

How To Apply

MA , M.Ed & M.Com

For all Programmes:-

You should apply online only through the official University website.

Step 1: You should register yourself at the website and click on “Register for New User”. You must enter your Name, Date of Birth, Email, Category, Whether Wards of Police, Details of the Police personnel/Ex-Police Personnel, 8 to 15 character pass word, confirm password and enter verification code, continue.

Step 2: You should enter your Personal Information and Academic Information of Class 10th and Class 12th level.

Step 3: You should the college of your preference.

Step 4: You should upload your Photo and Signature. Both the images must be in JPEG format with the photo should be of 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm dimensions, being less than 50kb in size and signature less than 20 kb in size.

Step 5: You must pay the following Application Fee through State Bank Collect Payment through Debit Card/Credit Card, or download SBI Challan and pay at any SBI branch.

  • M.Ed. ProgrammeRs. 150 for general category and Rs. 75 for SC/ST/PWD Category
  • M.Com and MA Programme:Rs. 300 for general category and Rs. 150 for SC/ST/PWD Category
  • M.Sc. Programme:Rs. 100 for general category and Rs. 50 for SC/ST/PWD Category

Step 6: You should then submit your application. Your application process is now complete.

Step 7: You can then download Application Form for future references. You are not required to submit hard copy of the Application Form.


Admission Process

M.Ed

You will be selected based on the following criteria:-

  1. Career Marking Note: In Career Marking five components (i.e. Aggregate marks obtained in 10th, 12th, Graduation, Post-Graduation & B.Ed. as mentioned in point (EC-I) will be proportionately evaluated in 50 marks by distributing 10 mark for each
  2. Entrance Test: There will be a written test of 1 hour and 30 minutes duration comprising of 50 compulsory MCQ type questions of 1 mark each (Total Marks 50) based on perspectives in teacher education.

M.Sc

For all M.Sc. Programmes:-

If you have not passed the B.Sc. Hons. Degree from Calcutta University, you will have to appear for the Entrance Exam conducted by the University.

The Test will be of 100 marks and for a duration of one hour. The number of questions in each test will be 50 questions and each question will have four options of which one will be correct answer. For each correct answer, you will be awarded 2 marks. There shall be negative marking of 0.5 marks for each wrong answer and for no try there will be 0 marks.

MA

You will be selected on the basis of merit.

M.Com

You will be selected on the basis of merit.


Reservation

Overall, the distribution of the reserved seats in favour of various sections will be as follows:-               

  • Scheduled Caste-22%
  • Scheduled Tribe- 6%
  • Physically Disabled- 3%

For M.Ed. Programme only: Total number of seats in the course is 50 of which 50% will be allotted for deputed and 50% to fresher candidates. If deputed seats remain vacant they can be filled up with fresher candidates.
